As always I keep running into more questions.
Historical
-Germany attacked in Late June 1941. The next day The US and other countries unfroze Russian money held since they invaded Finland. With this they began to buy needed items. One of the most important being High Octane fuel. Shipments began to arrive at Vladivostok within 10 days from the Dutch and a week later the US. The US was also contracted to upgrade Vladivostok's harbour and facilities.
- Same time delegation arrives in Washington to begin seeing what they can purchase. Some orders are placed. Direct orders for 4 engine bombers are refused.
- Delegation from the US and Britain arrive in USSR to see what the USSR needs for LL.
- Up till Sept. 1941 all Russian Purchases are made with gold.
- In Sept. 1941 Britain begins to divert some of its LL orders to the USSR, a lot goes through Vladivostok, some thru Murmansk and Archangel.
- In Sept. 1941 , delegation returns from USSR. Very bleak.
- FDR in Nov. declares that USSR is eligible for LL. Initial Billion in credit issued.
- Machine tools, food, trucks , tanks, planes, equipment are ordered.
- In Dec. 1941, Japan attacks the US. Vladivostok is cut off. Persian Gulf ports have to be used. Major shift in shipping routes.
- High Octane fuel becomes an issue again. By request of FDR Standard Oil sells secret of lead additive to Russia to help. Oil refining and Cracking towers added to LL orders to increase high octane gas output. Needed even more as first orders of M4's being sent to Russia also run on 80 octane fuel or higher.
- First Machine tools begin to arrive in Late 1942, early 1943. Several new plants are made and others upgraded.
In FFO
- Germany attacks in May 1942.
- Russia's high octane fuel problems are not going to go away. Based on production and storage capacity. They have 15 hours of fuel for there new aircraft, if all on Eastern front are run.
- Vladivostok is not available except for some Russian ships if they wish to try to go to the US and Back through a war zone.
- Assume all Russian Assets frozen because of Finland will be unfrozen.
- Assume some delegation from Russia to US
- Assume a delegation from the US, UK and France will go to USSR. Not as Bleak reports returning. Russia will still most likely be added to LL but without the historical preferrential treatment.
- Assume that because the USSR was not in the original plans put out by the War Production Board in Jan 1942. All resource projections and Production projections do not include there needs. More factories may have been made to use the projected resources that historically would have been earmarked for Russia. All shipping routes and plans would also have been laid out with the USSR not in the picture. How much of this will be stopped? Plants would have most likely started production by now....
- If machine tools are ordered they will not be ready till mid to late 1943.
- Resources will be hard to divert to Russia. High octane fuel can be sent when shipping route and covoys can be prepared.
- Possibly the lead additive can be sold to Russia but that will still limit fuel used for aircraft.
- Initial orders will most likely be finished goods, tanks, planes, munitions.....but all based on when enough shipping can be freed up for convoys to Russia. Persian Gulf ports will have to be upgraded as well as Train route.
What this will effect....
- Russian Airforce will be limited in operations.
- In FFO Appendix, it is assumed US machine tools will begin to arrive by late summer 1942. Cannot see how this can happen till late summer 43.
- Russian production will be limited without raw materials.
- Russian Munition plants will begin to run out of TNT and other explosives for shells, bombs and bullets by late fall 1942.
Plus all the other issues I've already talked about in Previous posts. What am I missing?
