I have been studying Japanese occupation of Malaya and looking at the Imperial re-conquest in APOD.
1942-43 is used stopping the Japanese on the Sittang and driven back to the Salween in 1942, then driven south in 43 so the Tenasserim is cleared (1943 is what enables the necessary logistic buildup under ROUNDSHOT to launch flanking invasions of NE Sumatra (OPERATION CULVERIN), then a significant strategic deception landing in Kedah (OPERATION ROBINET on the traditional invasion point on the coast north of Gunung Kedah), followed by a coup-de-main on Singapore to catch the IJA by surprise (OPERATION DRAGON).
We still have plenty of renaissance gun names to use, like Falcon, Serpentine, Basilisk, Saker, Minion, Veuglaire, and Ribaldequin.
CULVERIN is meant to draw out Kondo's 2nd fleet and defeat it and the IJN's land-based airpower, then land north of Gunung Kedah to draw the IJA 's attention north, and to defeat or tie down their land-based airpower in northern Malaya.
OPERATION DRAGON (a gun name and seriously appropriate in a Chinese/Asian milieu) is a very bold move, headed by every minesweeper they can lay their hands on to steam the whole fleet plus an invasion force with 4 infantry divisions and an armoured division-equivalent to hit Singapore from the sea while the 2 IJA Divisions there are still in their positions on the NE side of the island. There are BB there to tackle the coast defence 14" and 15" head-on (actually to distract them while HMS Devastation kills them with high-angle heavy fire using her 17.7" howitzer, other blockships with lighter howitzers helping and taking out the smaller batteries). If they lose BB sunk or smashed up, well, that's the price.
I mean, no-one but a lunatic would bypass Malaya to take Singapore from the sea, would they? And the RN we have 'written' in APOD is bold in attack.
You can see why it takes a year or more to build up for this. It's a vast logistic enterprise, and the entire reason we must have Norway and the new yard on the Clyde. Basically, the entire effort that went into the Western Desert in OTL is used to do this, less only what's needed to set up Bomber Command Middle East. It's ALSO the reason the Italian Tyrrhenian Triangle strategy has to be broken in late 1943 and the RMI destroyed. By the end of 43 we must be able to safely pass big convoys through the Med.
That's the general idea, I'd like comments, especially on logistics, appropriate airpower, and fleet numbers.
